Day 26, Wednesday 27th August – Musgrave to Cooktown via Lakefield and Battlecamp Roads

There was 6 motorcyclists at breakfast this morning, 2 heading north and 4 of us heading south. Jason was off south down the PDR straight after breakfast, while Chris from Newcastle on a GS1250 joined us as we headed to Cooktown.

Many people had mentioned that the Lakefield and Battlecamp Roads option was like a freeway compared to the PDR. We didn’t need much convincing, plus it’s a more scenic route and only maybe 20 kms longer.

N,B. Having now traversed the length I think there’s a bit of recency bias. 😁 The Musgrave end (at time of writing) is really, really good. The middle is ok and being worked on in multiple places, but the end is as corrugated as the PDR.

This was the 1st water crossing, supposedly the deepest of the 3 on this route, and the only one with a rock base ( the others were a concrete base).

Pretty simples, water mark was a couple of inches over the cuff of my trousers

At some roadworks we followed Chris down what he thought was the best route. Until it wasn’t. 😁 While watching him navigate the sand I slowed and that familiar feeling of being pulled to the left happened again. At least the cavalry wasn’t far away!

The UHF was really handy today – Chris had the same setup, and the road crews were all on 40 as well

The end of the dirt (for now)
Chris, our companion for the day
If only the lighthouse was here in 1770…😁
Low tide view of the reefs that caused The Endeavor to ground. View from Grassy Hill Lookout
While its a better road, its dirt 100 pct till you hit civilisation

Lizzie did a good job in securing a Studio Apartment with a washing machine for the 3 nights we have in Cooktown!

My pants were ready to walk to the washing nachine
My bag at the end of Every. Single. Day

Good dinner at the Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant attached to the motel, where we were joined by Chris to round out and review the day.
