Day 21, Friday 22nd August – Thursday Island & Bamaga to Punsand

Up early for the 7.15 am shuttle to the ferry. That was after a 30 minute session carrying all. Our. Bags. From the corner of the universe back to reception, so they could store them for the day.

The forklift driver has done this before, or has no fear. Moved pretty sprightly

Mutti, our local tour guide was quite the story teller, and was a very fit 76 yrs young. This from a plane wreck he found first in 1974, and again a couple of years ago

Lots of Japanese Pearl divers buried here, like 700. The Japanese Government pay the maintenance of the cemetary

Quick beer before the return ferry

I got dropped at the mechanics after the return crossing. They hadn’t gotten to the sidecar, and it was entirely unclear what the expectation was.

After a few calls with Bruce the sidecar whisperer from Townsville, who had offered to talk the mechanic through things, I felt confident enough I could have a crack at making the sidecar more rideable on the rest day we had scheduled in at Punsand Bay.

But 1st we had to get to Punsand…Opinions differed on routes, but it was 5.55pm before we left Bamaga so the main road it was.

Not much fun on a crippled bike, made worse by darkness falling as we came across an unexpected water crossing.

That i bogged the bike in on the exit.

Thankfully out of the water, and only 5 minutes of shovelling and mucking around. 2wd would’ve walked it out of there. Video yo come

That 5 minutes, and the 6 other dry but heavily rutted crossings was enough to make us miss out on thd Pizza menu, but the Calamari off the a la carte menu was pretty good. The choc brownie even better.
